5 Things to Expect When you Start at CGA

Thousands of students are returning to a new school year in 2025 within a matter of days. Whether it's your first day at a new school, or the return to a familiar one, we know that this new chapter is likely to bring mixed emotions; excitement, nervous anticipation, and potentially, worry too.

As an online private school, Crimson Global Academy (CGA) provides students a smooth entry into classes and the opportunity to take control of their learning to accelerate, build a strong foundation of understanding, or to broaden their subject and curriculum mastery.

Thanks to the dynamic virtual learning environment, technology allows students to prepare for online classes through a single digital platform, where they can review course work, familiarise themselves with their timetable, and form incredible friendships.

In the words of Miss Mikayla Wagner, Dean of Pastoral Care at CGA:

“Here at CGA we foster high performance, global citizenship and provide endless possibilities right at your fingertips. No matter where you are in the world, this is a place where you can grow, learn, and make an impact.”

As she welcomes returning and new students to the 2025 cohort, she reflected on her own hobbies that brought her joy  while in high school:

"I loved to make music and that was my passion. That is what I want to encourage each of you to do - to discover and nurture your passion while you're here at CGA. Whether your passion is in the arts and the sciences, leadership, or anything else, we're here to support you in finding your voice and pursuing what excites you... So starting today and every day going forward, we are going to look to you as leaders and legacy builders. We are writing this chapter in this book, in this big story that we call life, and I know what you're going to build is something monumental.”

Below we share 5 things to expect from learning at a global online school to excel as a student.

1. A Safe and Supportive Community

Given the transparency that teachers, school deans and parents have across school spaces, including our Microsoft Teams channels and within online school classes, the CGA community is able to uphold a nurturing, accepting, and inclusive space where students can adjust their environment to get the most out of their learning and social connections.

CGA is a safe place mentally, emotionally, socially, psychologically, if you need support, guidance, or just a place to come and talk and just to be yourself, we are all here for you. We believe in creating a very nurturing environment where you can thrive and you are always supported every single step of the way.

Speaking directly to incoming students, Mikayla added:

"So together we are going to help build this community where everybody belongs, where respect and care are at the heart of everything that we do. Just remember, you are never alone here.”

2. Orientation and Platform Familiarisation

As a CGA student, your initial days will involve getting acquainted with CGA's digital platforms including Canvas, Teams, and OneNote.

Through induction sessions, school assemblies and monthly parent meetings, you'll receive guidance on navigating virtual classrooms, submitting assignments, and participating in discussions.

This orientation ensures you're comfortable with the tools essential for your online education.

3. Be Proactive! Connect with Teachers and Classmates

There are plenty of opportunities to introduce yourself to teachers and fellow students through virtual social sessions, home rooms, assemblies and in-person meetups in cities like Auckland, Melbourne, Sydney, Tokyo and Orlando.

Letting your peers and instructors get a sense of who you are early on is a great way to boost your confidence, invite connections, and contribute to building a community.

Mrs Brittanie Bates, Principal of the US Diploma Pathway reflected on her own journey as a past student and sets a challenge for new students:

“When I was in high school, I used to love to be involved. I love to help shape my school community, and I'd like to challenge each of you [CGA students] to find a way that you can help shape our school community and walk our virtual hallways.

“Whether that's talking to somebody on Teams, joining a club, or just ensuring that you're at assembly and taking part, you will help make CGA what it is today, and we are thrilled to have you for this outstanding academic year.”

4. Structuring Your Study Routine and Learning Space

Developing a consistent study schedule is key to managing your time effectively.

During the first week, you'll familiarise yourself with your timetable which balances your classes, assignments, and personal commitments, setting the foundation for academic success.

At CGA, students have the option to study either part-time in one or two subjects to complement their existing schooling, or to study full-time.

The way students learn is also very flexible, which can be either through 1:1 classes with a teacher or in small, live group classes. Some students may also study course work asynchronously with CGA Flex class recordings.

As an online student, creating a dedicated, organised, and distraction-free study area is crucial. Setting up this space during your first week will enhance your concentration and productivity throughout your studies.

5. Exploring Extracurricular Opportunities

CGA offers a variety of virtual clubs and extracurricular activities. In your first week, you'll learn about how to participate, and why you should pursue interests beyond academics, and the value of connecting with like-minded peers.

Coming up in February 2025 is the highly popular CGA Clubs Fair, where students gain experience showcasing their club and pitching for others to join. Students are always welcome to create their own club, which is reviewed and approved by the school’s leadership team.

Reflecting on the power of extracurricular activities, Mrs Stephanie Todaro, Academic Dean of the US Diploma Pathway shares:

"While in high school, I loved participating in extracurricular activities, and I challenge you to step forward and try a new club and to get involved with our Mandela House activities as a student here at CGA."

Education at CGA is a blend of academic rigor and personal growth within a flexible online setting. By engaging fully in these initial experiences, you'll be well-prepared to thrive in your educational journey.

Mrs Beth Hairsnape, Dean of Greenwich campus’ Hawking House is in charge of the wellbeing and the academic progress of the campus’ students and is also a psychology teacher.

As a student, one of Beth’s favourite things was learning “new knowledge and also having all those new experiences as a high school student”.

Her challenge to students this year?

“Try something new - whether at CGA that means trying a new course, or it might be joining a new club or perhaps starting a new friendship....I'm so excited to welcome you to your first class of 2025, and I wish you all the best for the year ahead.”

As Mikayla also puts it: “This year is much more  than just school or academics. It's about you as a person, your growth, your leadership, and your impact.”
