We met with Yordan Arazov, CGA's Physics and Math teacher from Bulgaria, who has taught Integrated Mathematics, Computer Science, and AP Physics for students here at CGA.

Yordan was inspired to pursue a career in education by his parents, both engineers, and the exceptional teachers he had growing up. From a young age, he was immersed in science, having a small science lab at home, which nurtured his love for learning and discovery.

As an expert in teaching Maths and Physics online, what key advice would you give to students to excel in this subject?

The best advice that comes to mind is to work consistently. In Math and Physics each new unit builds upon concepts covered in previous units. Make sure to master a concept before moving to the next one - solve plenty of problems, and pay attention to detail!

An example of a way to do this is by creating a study schedule that allocates regular time for reviewing past material and practicing problem-solving. For instance, set aside time each day to work on math problems, ensuring that you cover both new topics and previously learned concepts.

What are some common misconceptions or challenges that students face in Maths and Physics classes?

A major challenge that students face is a fear of making mistakes, and a fear of asking questions. Math and Physics involve lots of problem solving, and making mistakes is a natural part of learning.

Another common concern is students often find abstract concepts in Math and Physics difficult to grasp. To overcome this, relate these concepts to real-world applications. Get creative! Understanding the physics of motion can be easier when related to everyday activities like driving a car or playing sports. Visualisation tools, such as graphs and diagrams, can also aid in comprehending abstract ideas.

What study strategies do you recommend for students to retain and apply knowledge effectively?

  1. Take notes in class
    Firstly, take notes in class! You will need the example solved problems with all the steps explained from class, when attempting to complete your homework. These notes will also be invaluable when you attempt to complete your homework or review for exams. Writing things down helps reinforce your understanding and creates a personalized reference that you can revisit.

  2. Start assignments early
    Secondly, start your assignments early. That way you can receive feedback from your teacher in a timely manner, and you can master all the concepts before the next class. Procrastination can lead to rushed work and incomplete understanding. By beginning your assignments soon after they are given, you allow yourself ample time to work through difficult problems, seek help if needed, and ensure you understand the material fully.

  3. Learn from mistakes

    Lastly, don’t be afraid to attempt an assignment more than once if you make mistakes - learning from your mistakes is the best way to improve. Review your mistakes carefully, understand where you went wrong, and correct them. This iterative process helps solidify your understanding and improves your problem-solving skills over time.

    In addition to these strategies, engage in active learning. This includes practicing problems regularly, teaching the material to someone else, and participating in study groups. Explaining concepts to peers can deepen your understanding and uncover any gaps in your knowledge.

Are there any specific resources or tools that you find particularly helpful for students studying Math and Physics?

I always recommend using tablets and annotation apps such as GoodNotes, they make learning more efficient and more fun. Also we use plenty of online tools, such as physics labs and simulations, gizmos, and graphing calculators, which help students understand functions and formulas in a more visual way.

How can students develop a passion for Math and Physics and stay motivated throughout their academic journey?

I believe that in the beginning, interest comes with confidence - when students are encouraged and are able to be successful in a particular subject, they tend to enjoy it more. After that it is a matter of being able to find an application of what you learned in class outside of school - we encourage that by helping students complete a project each term.

How can parents support their children's learning in Math and Physics outside of the classroom?

Parents can help their children develop an interest for these subjects by allowing them to participate in STEM activities (Science Technology, Engineering, Math). Whether it is purchasing a STEM kit, or joining a STEM event, these can inspire scientific thinking and create a lasting memory.
